Chapter 15

I backed away from Nox, disbelief coursing through me. The demon, the prince of hell he’d sent back to its realm all those centuries ago, was back. He’d been inside me. And he was probably really eager to meet me again, for more than just one reason.

I bumped against the desk and Nox took a step towards me.

“Do you think it’s true?” I asked. “Do you think I have the same power as you?”

Nox paused, then said, “Are you asking if I think you’re the Evening Star? I’m assuming Raven told you.”

He stared at me, hand slackened at his sides, and I nodded as I sat back on the desk. His enormous, dark wings manifested then, rustling as he walked over to me, stopping short just before he reached me. He didn’t answer my question, but his face said it all.

“When Abaddon returns, do you think you would be able to stop him?” I asked quietly. “I mean, I know the demon wasn’t supposed to come back until the Evening Star ‘shone again’ or whatever. But there’s two of us now, right?”

Nox swallowed and took a breath. “Last time, I burned myself out so completely that I still haven’t recovered,” he said. “And even then, it almost wasn’t enough. I’m not nearly that powerful anymore. Essentially, I’m just a Fae bastard with some wraith-blood at this point. So, to answer your question… I’m not really capable of that anymore. But you are.”

“Do you have any starlight left?”

I didn’t mean to ask the question so directly, but he didn’t scoff. Instead, he folded my hand in his and closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, the gold specks in his irises were glowing softly. He raised his hand slightly off my palm and with it a stream of light followed. His starlight was more like pure moonlight, whereas mine was closer to white-hot fire.

I watched the light for a long moment, mesmerized. Once it faded away, Nox murmured, “It started to manifest more strongly after I met you in the club.”

“Why?”

“I think my magic recognized yours.”

I nodded, at a loss for words. He paused, his hand still holding mine, and I realized just how close we were. I was sitting on the desk and he was standing between my legs. My hand tightened in his as heat began to pool in my core. I knew he could sense the shift in me… just faerie things.

His wings rustled again and I lifted my hand to brush a finger against them. Nox caught my hand, and took a deep breath before whispering, “Careful, love.”

“Why?” I murmured in response.

He gripped the desk with his other hand as he leaned in and breathed in my ear, “Because if you keep doing that, I may not be able to stay in control.”

“You managed well enough both times before,” I teased, my back arching on instinct at his closeness.

A low rumble escaped his chest and he replied, “The first time you did that, I was about five seconds from taking you right then and there on the kitchen counter.
